My Novel: ‘The Life of Millie Tori Child’

‘Perhaps like other military children, I was conceived before I was planned. My father is an RAF pilot and I sometimes wonder if this is true of all military operations. Or maybe it’s just my family’s unique way of operating…’

This is the first of many observations from the life of Millie, newborn to her newly married parents, Will and Anna Child. Absolutely everything is new to her, and almost the same is true for Anna.

Switching from career girl to military wife in the time it took to say ‘I do’, Anna is totally out of her depth on the battlefield that is military life in modern Britain. Juggling Millie and their wayward puppy, Dannatt, she lurches from one ridiculous disaster to another.

A colourful crew of family and friends step in to help out where they can. There’s Moomin, Anna’s Ferrari-driving, pedal-to-metal mother, who is rarely around long enough to offer any lasting support; Bunny, her thespian mother-in-law, forever caught up in a swirl of her own drama; the real nappy lady, who helps Anna navigate eco-parenting with mixed results; Anna’s best friend, Cathy, who used to live in a commune and refuses to modify her ‘Good Life’ ways despite now being a Navy wife; Roland the rat catcher and the aggressive, knee-breaking manager of the Childs’ hopeless attempts at building a property empire.

As Iraq and Afghanistan call Will away with increasing regularity, Anna’s muddles become more desperate as she and Millie begin to unravel.

Will anyone notice their invisible wounds? Will someone patch them up? And can Anna and Will’s marriage survive the cross fire?

Easy read, funny and poignant’

‘If you haven’t aleady realised the title means Military Child. This is the author’s semi-autobiography written through the eyes of her first child which gives a new twist on biographies. It was an easy read, hard to put down. I enjoyed the interactions with Spike and Cathy the most. The author has met some interesting people in her life. Find out what S.H.I.T. and S.H.A.M. means in military-speak. I laughed outloud a few times and was shocked, even though I am a military wife, by the reality of what some families have to go through. At the end, Millie starts school, so please can we have book 2.’
